The Kansas City Current played to a 1-1 draw against host Gotham FC on Sunday.
The draw ended Kansas City’s (3-1-0, 10 points) winning streak at three matches.
Gotham (1-1-1, 4 points) was playing its home opener.
Current forward Temwa Chawinga had a chance to open the scoring in the eighth minute when she broke in down the right side before cutting the middle inside the box for a chance, but goalkeeper Cassie Miller got her left foot out to keep the ball out.
Chawinga wouldn’t be denied a second time. In the 17th minute, Bia Zaneretto won a battle in the defensive third and maintained possession as Chawinga joined her driving up the pitch. Zaneretto pushed the ball behind the Gotham defenders and Chawinga split through them to pick it up, getting to the box before lifting it over Miller, who was off her line, for a 1-0 lead.
Gotham started to find its game and began to push as the half progressed. In the 41st minute, Yazmeen Ryan was at the top of the box for a chance but Kansas City goalkeeper Adrianna Franch dived to deny her. Three minutes later, Katie Stengel missed just past the right post.
The hosts continued to press in the second half, and Franch had to be sharp.
In the 48th minute, Franch got in front of a quick shot by Crystal Dunn from the box, and then seconds later made her best stop of the match when she got her hand up to tip a Stengel header that hit the crossbar and then hold it tight along the left post after it landed.
Gotham finally broke through in the 52nd minute. Esther Gonzalez, from the left side of the box, headed a corner by Ryan into the far side to tie it 1-1.
