Temwa Chawinga scored just after halftime to allow the host Kansas City Current to come away with a 1-1 draw against NJ/NY Gotham on Saturday afternoon.

Chawinga got free for a breakaway that ended with her dribbling past NJ/NY goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger in the 52nd minute. She effortlessly tapped a wide-open right-footed shot into the back of the net for her league-leading 17th goal of the season.

Kansas City (12-3-7, 43 points) extended its unbeaten streak to four matches (2-0-2).

NJ/NY (13-4-5, 44 points) went up 1-0 in the 23rd minute when a cross that got sent into the box got a piece of Current defender Alana Cook for an own goal.

Almuth Schult made six saves for Kansas City, while Berger stopped three shots for NJ/NY.

Claire Hutton had a golden opportunity to move the Current in front in the first minute of second-half stoppage time, but her attempt off a rebound sailed over the crossbar.

Hutton was wide left on another shot three minutes later.

Chawinga was issued a yellow card in the 81st minute for unintentionally kicking Berger in the head during a goalmouth scramble. Trainers attended to Berger, who was able to stay in the match.

With the draw, Kansas City was unable to gain any ground on NJ/NY in the standings. The Current sit in fourth place and are still one point behind third-place Gotham.
