NWSL News: Becki Tweed named Angel City FC head coach

Angel City FC removed the interim label and named Becki Tweed as head coach on Thursday.

Tweed guided the NWSL club to an 8-2-5 record in all competitions after being promoted from assistant coach to interim coach on June 14.

That stretch included an 11-game unbeaten streak and led to Angel City’s first playoff appearance.

“I’m really proud to be staying with Angel City,” Tweed said in a news release. “I am most excited to have the opportunity to pick up where we left off. We aren’t starting over. We are continuing to build and have unfinished business. We have created a strong foundation, and now our expectations are higher.”

Tweed replaced Freya Coombe, who was fired after the team won just two of its first 11 matches.

“From the day she assumed the role of interim head coach, Becki never looked back. She proved that she could not only lead this team, but gain the trust and buy-in of all the players in a short period of time,” said ACFC general manager Angela Hucles Mangano.

“Following a thorough five-month search process, Becki emerged as the absolute right choice not only due to her record, which exceeded expectations by anyone’s measure, but also her ability to instill the belief in the players that they could turn the season around and make playoffs. We are thrilled to drop that interim tag off her title, and officially call her head coach. We look forward to seeing all she can bring to the club next year and beyond.”

After playing professionally in her native England and the U.S., Tweed worked as an assistant coach with the NWSL club NJ/NY Gotham FC during the 2020 through 2022 seasons.
