No. 5 Iowa State experiences no trouble in opener vs. MVSU

Keshon Gilbert scored 17 points, Tamin Lipsey added 16 and No. 5 Iowa State cruised to an 83-44 win over Mississippi Valley State on Monday night in Ames, Iowa, in both teams’ season opener.

Joshua Jefferson and Milan Momcilovic each finished with 10 points for Iowa State, which led by double digits for most of the game. Dishon Jackson had nine points and six rebounds.

Donovan Sanders scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Mississippi Valley State. Greg Moore tallied 10 points, and Antonio Sisk had nine.

Iowa State shot 47.5 percent (28-for-59) overall and 23.8 percent (5-for-21) from beyond the arc. Mississippi Valley State hit 37.3 percent (19-for-51) overall and a paltry 8.3 percent (1-for-12) from 3-point range.

The Cyclones opened the second half on an 18-4 run to grab a 62-25 lead. Lipsey assisted on a 3-pointer by Nate Heise to finish the scoring binge.

Sisk made a 3-pointer 23 seconds later for Mississippi Valley State.

Gilbert increased the Cyclones’ lead to 70-30 a few minutes later with a pair of free throws.

Iowa State built a 44-21 lead at the half.

Lipsey led all scorers with 11 points on 3-for-5 shooting at the break. Jefferson added 10 points and made all four of his shot attempts from the field.

The Cyclones led by as many as 25 points in the first half. Lipsey made a layup to put Iowa State on top 44-19 with 46 seconds remaining before intermission.

A 15-0 run helped Iowa State build a lopsided lead in the early going.

Alvin Stredic made a layup off an assist from Sisk to cut Mississippi Valley State’s deficit to 25-15 with 7:50 to go in the first half.

Jefferson answered with back-to-back jump shots, which started the dominant run that ended with the Cyclones on top 40-15. Nojus Indrusaitis made a dunk and a jump shot during the run, Gilbert made a jumper, Jackson scored on a layup and Lipsey drained a 3-pointer.

Stredic finished the first-half scoring with two free throws for the Delta Devils.
