No. 25 New Mexico continues Mountain West dominance, downs Nevada

Jaelen House had 21 points and No. 25 New Mexico shot 58.6 percent from the field to pick up an 89-55 victory over Nevada on Sunday night in a Mountain West game at Albuquerque, N.M.

New Mexico (18-3, 6-2 Mountain West) has won five straight conference games by double figures, the longest such streak since a seven-game run in 2011-12.

The Lobos also snapped a nine-game losing streak to Nevada (16-5, 3-4).

House made four of New Mexico’s 11 shots from 3-point range. He also led the Lobos with six assists and six steals.

Four other New Mexico players scored in double figures: Jamal Mashburn Jr. (14 points), Nelly Joseph (12), Donovan Dent (11) and Mustapha Amzil (11).

New Mexico made 34 of 58 shots from the field, including 11 of 22 from 3-point range.

Nevada did not have a scorer in double figures. Jarod Lucas and Kenan Blackshear each finished with nine points.

The Wolf Pack shot 33.9 percent from the field and 23.5 percent from beyond the arc, including a 1-of-10 performance from there in the second half.

The Lobos never trailed after taking a 10-0 lead with 16:39 left in the first half.

Nevada missed its first eight shots from the field.

The Wolf Pack stopped the drought with 13:49 remaining in the half, when Tre Coleman made a 3-pointer to cut the hosts’ lead to 12-5.

An 11-2 run by New Mexico increased its lead to 36-17 with 3:21 left before halftime.

The Lobos led 38-24 at halftime, getting 10 points from Joseph before the break.

Nevada went on a 10-2 run to cut New Mexico’s lead to 53-44 with 10:11 remaining in the game.

The Lobos answered in the next 44 seconds with consecutive 3-pointers by Tru Washington and House to increase the lead to 59-44.

New Mexico’s next three made baskets were also 3-pointers.

House made the last one of this stretch with 6:05 left, giving the Lobos a 68-48 lead.

A 10-0 run, capped by another 3-pointer by House with 3:20 to go, turned the game into a rout, with New Mexico leading 78-51.
