Vladislav Goldin scored 15 points and No. 19 Florida Atlantic relied on balanced scoring and clutch second-half 3-point shooting to pull away from host Charlotte in a 67-52 victory Saturday afternoon.

Just two days after their school-record 20-game winning streak ended with a loss at Alabama-Birmingham, the Owls (22-2, 12-1 Conference USA) were back in a groove.

Alijah Martin scored 13 points, Brandon Weatherspoon had 10 and Johnell Davis and Michael Forrest each added eight points for Florida Atlantic, which shot 55.3 percent from the field.

The Owls were boosted by a 12-0 run in the second half.

Brice Williams led Charlotte (13-10, 4-8), which lost its third game in a row, with 14 points, and Isaiah Folkes had 10 points. The 49ers hit only 7 of 22 attempts (31.8 percent) from 3-point range and three of the makes from distance came in the last 1:35.

Florida Atlantic scored the first eight points of the second half while holding the 49ers scoreless for almost six minutes. Charlotte closed within 38-35 before the Owls put together another run.

Charlotte went nearly four minutes without scoring as Florida Atlantic cranked out a 50-35 edge with 9:47 remaining.

Florida Atlantic’s Bryan Greenlee hit a pair of 3-pointers in the second half. Goldin and Martin finished as the team leaders in rebounds with six apiece.

Charlotte played its second game in a row without Aly Khalifa, the team’s second-leading scorer (11.2 points per game) and top rebounder (7.0 per game) who was out because of COVID-19.

Charlotte led 31-30 at halftime despite Florida Atlantic’s 50-percent shooting from the field. The Owls didn’t attempt a first-half free throw.

Florida Atlantic committed seven first-half turnovers compared to Charlotte’s four. Both teams received nine points from their reserves in the opening half.

For the Owls, Saturday’s outcome turned out to be much more comfortable than their 71-67 triumph against Charlotte on Jan. 7 at home.
