No. 15 Saint Mary’s pulls away for 81-64 win over Portland

Logan Johnson scored a career-high 34 points and Alex Ducas added 18 as No. 15 Saint Mary’s pulled away for an 81-64 victory over host Portland in West Coast Conference play on Saturday.

Johnson shot 11 of 18 from the field, including 4 of 8 from 3-point range, and added six assists and six rebounds. Ducas did all of his scoring from beyond the arc, where he went 6 of 10 for the Gaels, who won for the 13th time in their past 14 games.

Aidan Mahaney had 10 points for Saint Mary’s, which knocked off the Pilots for the 12th straight time and 21st time in their past 22 meetings dating to February 2011.

Saint Mary’s (22-5, 11-1 WCC), which led by as many as 23 in the second half, shot 28 of 63 (44.4 percent) from the field, including a scorching 15 of 32 (46.9 percent) from 3-point range. The Gaels outrebounded the Pilots 41-22.

Portland (13-15, 5-8), which has dropped two of its past three games, was led by Kristian Sjolund’s 12 points, which were all scored in the first half. Tyler Robertson and Juan Sebastian Gorosito added 10 points apiece.

The Pilots shot 24 of 48 from the field, including 33.3 percent from beyond the arc.

Saint Mary’s put the game away by opening the second half with a 16-0 run to take a 55-38 lead with 14:23 to play. Portland didn’t recover.

Neither team led by more than six points in the first half, which ended with Saint Mary’s up 39-38.

Johnson scored 20 points while Ducas scored nine in the first 20 minutes for St. Mary’s, which shot 12 of 33 from the field before the break, including 7 of 18 from beyond the arc.

Portland was led by Sjolund’s 12 first-half points while Gorosito added 10.

The Pilots shot an impressive 15 of 26 (42.3 percent) from the field before the break, including 4 of 10 from beyond the arc.
