Baylor Scheierman had 21 points and eight rebounds and Trey Alexander recorded 20 points and seven rebounds to help No. 15 Creighton notch a 79-65 victory over Oklahoma State on Thursday night in the Big East-Big 12 Battle in Stillwater, Okla.
Steven Ashworth added 17 points and Ryan Kalkbrenner had 16 points and 12 rebounds as the Bluejays (6-1) bounced back from a 69-48 whipping from Colorado State on Nov. 23.
The victory was Creighton’s first in Stillwater since 1943. The school had dropped its past five visits.
Javon Small scored 24 points and Eric Dailey Jr. added 13 points and 11 rebounds for Oklahoma State (3-4).
The Cowboys made 40.3 percent of their attempts and were 7 of 16 from behind the arc.
Kalkbrenner moved into 24th place on Creighton’s all-time scoring list with 1,275 career points. He passed Wally Anderzunas (1,267 in 1965-67 and 1968-69) and Bob Gibson (1,272, 1954-57) — the latter being the legendary Hall of Fame baseball pitcher who was a two-sport star for the Bluejays.
Creighton shot 52.7 percent, including 10 of 19 from 3-point range. Ashworth made four 3-pointers and Scheierman hit three.
Ashworth scored 14 points and Kalkbrenner added 12 as the Bluejays led 47-29 at the break. Small had 12 in the half for Oklahoma State.
Oklahoma State’s Dailey buried a 3-pointer to knot the score at 23 with 9:32 remaining in the half shortly before Creighton exploded with 17 straight points.
Kalkbrenner scored seven points during the run, including a layup to start it and give the Bluejays a 30-27 edge with 6:08 left. Scheierman tallied the final four points as Creighton led 45-27 with 1:39 to play.
The Cowboys trimmed their 18-point halftime deficit to 52-40 on Dailey’s trey with 15:24 left in the contest. But Creighton scored seven of the next nine points to push their lead back to 17 with 11:32 left.
Over 3 1/2 minutes later, Jarius Hicklen connected on a trey to bring Oklahoma State within 62-50.
Alexander halted that charge by scoring back-to-back baskets to give the Bluejays a 16-point lead with 6:39 left.
The Cowboys again moved within 12, on a basket by Jamyron Keller with 1:44 remaining. But Alexander made two free throws and Scheierman drained a 3-pointer with 56.4 seconds left as Creighton closed it out.
