Movie Review: Nightbitch (2024)

Marielle Heller’s Nightbitch is a bold and genre-bending adaptation of Rachel Yoder’s acclaimed 2021 novel, blending black comedy and body horror into a surreal exploration of motherhood and identity. Anchored by a transformative performance from Amy Adams, the film is as unsettling as it is darkly humorous, delivering an unforgettable cinematic experience.

Adams stars as the unnamed Mother, a former artist turned overworked stay-at-home mom. As she grapples with the isolation and monotony of domestic life, her sense of self begins to unravel. What starts as a quirky tale of suburban ennui quickly spirals into something far more bizarre, as Mother becomes convinced she is physically transforming into a dog each night. The film delves into themes of repressed desires, societal expectations of motherhood, and the primal instincts that lie just beneath the surface.

Heller’s direction is both daring and intimate, capturing the mundane and the grotesque in equal measure. The movie leans heavily into its body horror elements, using vivid and unsettling imagery to reflect Mother’s psychological descent. Yet, it’s the sharp satirical edge that keeps the story grounded, ensuring the audience can laugh through the unease.

Amy Adams delivers one of her most fearless performances to date, fully embodying a woman teetering on the edge of human and animalistic urges. Her portrayal captures the raw vulnerability and rage of a mother pushed to her limits. Scoot McNairy provides a subdued counterpoint as the oblivious husband, while Zoë Chao and Mary Holland shine as Mother’s bemused yet supportive friends. Jessica Harper’s turn as Mother’s own mother adds depth to the generational commentary.

The child actors, Arleigh Patrick Snowden and Emmett James Snowden, offer a naturalistic portrayal of the chaos and innocence that both fuel and hinder Mother’s transformation.

Nightbitch thrives on its disorienting blend of tones. Cinematographer Kolja Brandt juxtaposes the sterile brightness of suburban life with shadowy, animalistic sequences that border on the hallucinatory. The film’s visual language underscores the duality of its protagonist’s experience, creating an atmosphere that’s as claustrophobic as it is feral.

The film’s black comedy roots are evident in its sharp dialogue and absurd scenarios, but Heller never lets the humor overshadow the emotional core. The tension between laughter and horror keeps the audience on edge, mirroring Mother’s own fractured state of mind.

Nightbitch is a wild, daring film that isn’t afraid to get its paws dirty. It’s a visceral and darkly funny exploration of the sacrifices and identity crises inherent in motherhood, elevated by a powerhouse performance from Amy Adams and Marielle Heller’s visionary storytelling. While its blend of absurdity and horror may not be for everyone, those willing to embrace its weirdness will find a story that is as thought-provoking as it is unsettling.

Rating: 4.5/5
If you’re ready to howl with laughter and terror Nightbitch is a webfans must-watch.
