Consumers Should Be Aware-DO NOT DRIVE warnings have been issued for certain vehicles that are at a far higher risk for an air bag explosion that could injure or kill vehicle occupants. These vehicles can and should be repaired immediately.
NHTSA reported 67 million air bag inflators were unsafe, but today, Tuesday adjusted that estimate to account for “over-inclusive responses reported to the agency by certain manufacturers over the course of the investigation.”
Two people have been killed in the US and Canada by ARC inflators, including a woman from Michigan in 2021, according to NHTSA, which stated that a recall is necessary. According to the EPA, the air bag inflators have also resulted in seven injuries.
Vehicles from 2000 to 2018 made by the manufacturers recalled are, Hyundai, Kia, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen, BMW, Ford, and GM,
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had formally ruled the air bag inflators from ARC and Delphi defective after an eight-year inquiry. This was the first stage in the agency’s process for requiring both firms to recall the car parts. The inflators will be the subject of a public hearing on October 5 by NHTSA authorities, after which they may move to request a court-ordered recall.
NHTSA claimed that ARC resisted its request to recall the air bag inflators in May. Asserting that any issues with its air bags “resulted from random ‘one-off’ manufacturing anomalies that were properly addressed” with individual recalls, ARC disputed that its products are defective in a letter dated May 11.
