Thomas Chabot scored at 1:46 of overtime and the Ottawa Senators beat the visiting Washington Capitals 5-4 on Thursday night after surrendering a two-goal third-period lead.

After a battle along the boards in the extra session, Shane Pinto passed the puck out to Chabot alone in the slot, and Chabot beat Charlie Lindgren for the winner.

Washington’s Alex Ovechkin scored career goal No. 876 to pull within 19 of passing Wayne Gretzky for first place all time. He added two assists to go with his 23rd goal of the season.

Dylan Strome scored twice and Connor McMichael had a goal and an assist for the Capitals, who had won seven of their previous eight games. Charlie Lindgren made 29 saves.

Josh Norris had a goal and two assists for the Senators, who have won three straight. Pinto, Chabot and Jake Sanderson each logged a goal and an assist, and Ridly Greig also scored. Anton Forsberg stopped 31 shots.

Lindgren stopped Pinto on a penalty shot at 12:14 of the third period, and Ovechkin’s power-play goal on a wrist shot from the high slot pulled the Capitals within 4-3 at 13:01.

Strome tied the score 4-4 at 14:31 when he knocked in his own rebound during a scramble in front.

Greig gave the Senators a 1-0 lead at 4:08 of the second period when David Perron’s centering pass deflected in off his foot during a power play.

McMichael ended an 11-game goal drought and tied the game 1-1 at 7:43 of the second, scoring on a wrist shot near the right post off a pass from Pierre-Luc Dubois.

Ottawa’s Travis Hamonic took a hooking penalty at 17:24 of the middle period, but the game soon turned in favor of the Senators.

Norris was taken down by Washington’s John Carlson on a short-handed breakaway and converted the penalty shot at 17:37 to give Ottawa a 2-1 lead.

Pinto made it 3-1 with a short-handed goal at 18:15. Pinto entered the zone two-on-one and passed to Norris, who was robbed by Lindgren before Pinto put the rebound into the open net.

Strome pulled the Capitals within 3-2 at 7:58 of the third period, scoring a power-play goal on a wrist shot from the right circle.

Sanderson increased the lead to 4-2 at 10:38 of the third, scoring on a shot through traffic from the point during a power play.
