William Eklund scored a power-play goal 39 seconds into overtime to fuel the visiting San Jose Sharks to a 2-1 victory over the Washington Capitals on Tuesday.

San Jose received a power play late in the third period after rugged Washington forward Tom Wilson was whistled for a double minor after high-sticking rookie Macklin Celebrini. The Capitals kept the Sharks at bay during regulation to secure a point before Eklund’s one-timer from the right circle trickled past Logan Thompson for his fifth goal of the season.

San Jose’s Tyler Toffoli scored a goal late in the first period and Celebrini notched an assist on Eklund’s tally to extend his point streak to five games.

Mackenzie Blackwood made 27 saves for the Sharks, who have won four of their last five games overall. San Jose improved to 2-0-0 on its six-game road trip and 4-7-4 away from home this season.

Nic Dowd scored a goal in the second period and Thompson turned aside 29 shots to fall to 10-1-2 for the Capitals, who were thwarted in their bid to win five in a row for the second time this season. Washington won five straight games from Oct. 15-23.

Ivan Miroshnichenko set up Dowd’s goal to boost his career-high point and assist streaks to three games.

Toffoli used Washington defenseman Rasmus Sandin as a screen and unleashed a shot from well above the circles that beat Thompson to open the scoring with exactly one minute to play in the first period. Toffoli’s goal was his team co-leading 10th of the season and first since Nov. 18.

Blackwood made the slim lead stand up by stopping all 16 shots he faced in the first period.

Dowd, however, scored his second goal in his last three games to forge a 1-1 tie with 6:58 remaining in the second period.

An unmarked Dowd one-timed a centering feed from Martin Fehervary that sailed past Blackwood for his seventh goal of the season.
