Seth Jarvis broke a tie late in the game with the first of his two goals and new teammate K’Andre Miller scored twice in his team debut as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the New Jersey Devils 6-3 in the season opener for both teams Thursday night at Raleigh, N.C.
Jarvis netted a tiebreaking goal with 2:43 remaining and then picked up an empty-net tally with 55 seconds to play before Eric Robinson tacked on another goal.
Taylor Hall supplied a goal and an assist for the Hurricanes, while teammates Sebastian Aho and Shayne Gostisbehere had two assists apiece. Frederik Andersen made 19 saves.
It was a hectic final 10 minutes as the teams traded scoring chances in the rematch of last spring’s Eastern Conference first-round playoff series, won by Carolina in five games. The Hurricanes racked up four goals in the final 10 minutes on Thursday.
Jesper Bratt had a goal and an assist while Dougie Hamilton and Cody Glass each scored for the Devils. Luke Hughes provided two assists, and Jacob Markstrom made 27 saves.
The Hurricanes have won six of their past seven season openers.
Jarvis was Carolina’s leading goal-scorer last season, and he got off to a strong start, increasing his career goals total to 98. Miller was added via a trade with the New York Rangers in July.
Miller’s second goal came on a power play with 9:39 remaining in regulation. Bratt tied the score just 1:17 later.
Hall opened the scoring at 4:06 of the first period, with one of the assists going to Alexander Nikishin for his first regular-season NHL point.
Hamilton, a former Hurricane, got the Devils even at 8:15 of the second period.
Just 68 seconds later, Miller produced his first goal with his new team.
Glass tied the game with a goal about 4 1/2 minutes later. The score was tied 2-2 through two periods.
