Roope Hintz and Joe Pavelski each had three points, and Scott Wedgewood made 23 of his career-high 46 saves in the third period as the visiting Dallas Stars held on for a 4-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night.

Hintz scored twice and assisted on a goal from Pavelski, who had two assists as the Stars improved to 7-1-1.

Edmonton fan favorite Sam Gagner posted two third-period goals to open his third stint with the club and make it a one-goal game. The Oilers owned a 25-9 shot advantage in the third, but Wedgewood proved stout down the stretch as the hosts lost in regulation for the sixth time in nine games this season.

Dallas opened the scoring 8:08 into the game when Matt Duchene got the puck in transition, skated in on the wing and beat Edmonton’s Stuart Skinner (23 saves) to extend his point streak to five games.

Edmonton, though, answered with three minutes remaining in the first. After the Oilers’ Ryan Nugent-Hopkins disrupted Pavelski’s own-zone control of the puck, it was grabbed by Evander Kane, who drove it home for his third goal in four games.

Pavelski, however, reclaimed the lead for Dallas just 3:25 into the second period. A Miro Heiskanen stretch pass found Hintz, who sent a cross-zone pass for Pavelski to one-time for his fourth goal.

Dallas killed a pair of penalties later in the second against the vaunted Edmonton power-play unit, which failed on all four chances. The Stars extended their lead with the man-advantage as 3:54 remained in the middle period when Hintz put in a Skinner rebound of Pavelski’s shot.

Hintz and Pavelski then came together just 2:37 into the third for a 4-1 Dallas lead. Jason Robertson found Pavelski, who sent a cross-slot pass for Hintz to chip in.

Gagner made things interesting when he poked in career goal No. 193 with 9:25 left in regulation. Then via a two-on-one with Kane, Gagner slid the puck by Wedgewood with 6:24 to play.
