The Detroit Red Wings placed forward Jakub Vrana on waivers Tuesday.
The move comes nearly 2 1/2 weeks after he returned from the NHL/NHL Players’ Association Player Assistance Program on Dec. 16. He was assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League last Tuesday.
Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said Monday that Vrana’s stint in the AHL would be extended three more games. The Red Wings, however, needed to waive a player in order to activate forward Robby Fabbri off injured reserve, and they elected to waive Vrana.
Vrana, 26, has until 2 p.m. ET on Wednesday to clear waivers.
Vrana has collected one goal and one assist in two games this season after totaling 13 and six, respectively, in 26 games last season. His 2021-22 campaign was slow to begin after he underwent shoulder surgery following an injury sustained during training camp.
Vrana has 189 points (98 goals, 91 assists) in 323 career games with the Washington Capitals and Red Wings. He was selected by the Capitals with the 13th overall pick in the 2014 NHL Draft.
