Detroit Red Wings forward Jakub Vrana was placed in the NHL and NHL Players’ Association player assistance program.
The league and the NHLPA announced the move in a joint statement on Wednesday evening.
Vrana, 26, will be unavailable to the Red Wings for an indefinite period of time. He will continue to be paid while receiving treatment, however.
Vrana missed Detroit’s 5-4 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Monday and practice the following day for what coach Derek Lalonde said were “personal reasons.”
Vrana has one goal and one assist in two games this season after totaling 13 and six, respectively, last season. His 2021-22 campaign was slow to begin after he underwent shoulder surgery following an injury sustained during training camp.
Vrana has 189 points (98 goals, 91 assists) in 323 career games with the Washington Capitals and Red Wings. He was selected by the Capitals with the 13th overall pick in the 2014 NHL Draft.
