The Pittsburgh Penguins placed veteran goaltender Tristan Jarry on waivers Wednesday.
Jarry, 29, is 8-8-4 with a 3.31 goals-against average and an .886 save percentage in 22 games this season.
The two-time All-Star surrendered three goals on 17 shots in Tuesday’s 4-2 home loss to the Seattle Kraken, including third-period goals 49 seconds apart by Jamie Oleksiak and Eeli Tolvanen that wiped out Pittsburgh’s 2-1 lead.
Jarry signed a five-year, $26.9 million extension in July 2023, putting him under contract through 2027-28. The veteran netminder has a $5.375 million cap hit this season and a 12-team no-trade clause.
“No. 1, objectively, he came in and he’d had a great offseason,” Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas said. “He came in in a great spot and it’s a credit to him. I think throughout this whole stretch, he’s continued to come in here, put the work in and that’s not been a question at all. That just hasn’t materialized the way we would like it to on the ice.
“At this level, you get to the point where you have to do what’s right in the long run — for him and for us.”
A second-round draft pick by Pittsburgh in 2013, Jarry is 144-92-29 with 19 shutouts, a 2.74 GAA and .910 save percentage in 278 games with the Penguins.
“I don’t think you make the All-Star team twice if you don’t have a certain level of talent and you’re not capable of making timely saves,” Pittsburgh head coach Mike Sullivan said. “So, I know that Tristan has it. I believe to my core that he’s an NHL goaltender.”
The Penguins will move forward with a goaltender rotation of Alex Nedeljkovic and rookie Joel Blomqvist.
“At this point, just feel it’s best in the long run for the team and for Tristan to allow Joel to come up here,” Dubas said. “We think over the past year and a half, with his play in Wilkes-Barre and when he’s been up here with us, he’s earned the right to have a go at it, and we get a chance to see what he can do in a prolonged look.”
