Edmonton Oilers defenseman Mattias Ekholm is dealing with a hip flexor injury that will keep him off the ice as training camp begins.
Oilers general manager Ken Holland on Wednesday did not provide a timetable for Ekholm’s return.
The Oilers acquired Ekholm in February from Nashville, the only team he had played for until the trade.
Ekholm, 33, posted 14 points (four goals, 10 assists) for the Oilers in 21 games. Overall, he posted 32 points (nine goals, 23 assists) in 2022-23.
Ekholm has 282 points (66 goals, 216 assists) and plus-132 rating in 740 career games played.
The Oilers open the preseason on Sunday against Winnipeg.
