NHL News: NHL roundup: Surging Ducks edge Flames in shootout win

Mason McTavish scored the shootout-winning goal to give the host Anaheim Ducks an entertaining 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames on Sunday to run their winning streak to five games.

Cutter Gauthier scored twice for the Ducks, who have won 12 of 14 games and moved within one point of the Vegas Golden Knights for the top spot in the Pacific Division. Anaheim also has one game in hand. Goalie Lukas Dostal made 32 saves through overtime and surrendered one goal in the shootout.

McTavish netted the difference winner in the third round by patiently waiting for an opening before tucking home the puck. Anaheim has a perfect 7-0 record in shootouts this season. Leo Carlsson also scored in the shootout.

Joel Farabee and Yegor Sharangovich scored in regulation for the Flames, who finished a three-game road trip through California with a 1-1-1 record. Goalie Devin Cooley stopped 34 shots through overtime but could not find enough magic in the shootout.

Islanders 5, Panthers 4

Anders Lee scored the game-winning goal with 30.9 seconds left for surging New York, which overcame another two-goal deficit to beat Florida in Elmont, N.Y.

Lee got a step on the Panthers’ Aaron Ekblad, extended his stick to draw out goalie Sergei Bobrovsky and buried a forehand into the wide-open left corner of the net. Rookie Matthew Schaefer scored twice while Carson Soucy and Bo Horvat also scored for the Islanders, who have won five straight games. New York has trailed 2-0 in each of its last three victories. Goalie David Rittich made 29 saves.

Sam Bennett scored twice while Sandis Vilmanis and Sam Reinhart scored one apiece for Florida, which has lost seven of nine (2-7-0). Bobrovsky recorded 21 saves.

Penguins 5, Golden Knights 0

Arturs Silovs made 22 saves for his second shutout of the season as host Pittsburgh cruised to a victory over Vegas.

It was the second career shutout in 47 career starts for Silovs. Bryan Rust, Ben Kindel and Justin Brazeau each had a goal and an assist, Erik Karlsson had two assists and Egor Chinakhov and Rickard Rakell also scored goals for the Penguins, who improved to 10-1-4 since Jan. 13.

Adin Hill finished with 17 saves for the Golden Knights, who their second straight game. Vegas forward Mark Stone left near the end of the first period and didn’t return after defenseman Kris Letang gave him a seemingly harmless shove to his upper left arm with his stick. Stone went down to one knee and then immediately skated to the locker room.

Blues 3, Wild 1

Pavel Buchnevich scored the go-ahead goal with 3:39 to play, and St. Louis held on for a win over Minnesota in Saint Paul, Minn.

Logan Mailloux and Robert Thomas also scored for the Blues, who bounced back from a loss against the New Jersey Devils one day earlier. St. Louis won for the second time in its last three games. Goaltender Joel Hofer stopped 22 of 23 shots to earn the victory. He improved to 14-11-3 on the season and moved within one win of 50 career victories.

Kirill Kaprizov scored the lone goal for the Wild, who have dropped back-to-back contests. Goaltender Filip Gustavsson turned aside 21 of 23 shots.

Sharks 2, Jets 1 (OT)

Michael Misa scored at 1:40 of overtime, and San Jose rallied for a win against visiting Winnipeg.

Misa carried the puck up the middle, split the defense and veered to his left before putting a wrist shot over Connor Hellebuyck’s blocker short side. Will Smith also scored, and Alex Nedeljkovic made 27 saves for the Sharks, who have won two straight after a five-game skid.

Morgan Barron scored, and Hellebuyck made 31 saves for the Jets, who have lost four of five (1-1-3).

Blackhawks 4, Mammoth 0

Arvid Soderblom made 22 saves for his first career shutout and Chicago defeated Utah in Salt Lake City.

It was Soderblom’s 104th career game. Teuvo Teravainen had a power-play goal and a short-handed tally while Nick Foligno and Landon Slaggert also scored for the Blackhawks, who snapped their three-game losing streak. They had also lost five of their previous six.

Karel Vejmelka stopped 24 shots for the Mammoth, who lost for the second time in their last five games.
