Stuart Skinner made 30 saves Tuesday night and the Edmonton Oilers earned a 2-0 victory over the New York Rangers, who were shut out in a third straight home game.
New York’s 180-minute scoreless streak on home ice to start the season is the second longest in league history and the longest by an active franchise, according to NHL Stats. The longest home scoreless streak to begin a season was 187:19 by the defunct Pittsburgh Pirates in 1928-29.
Skinner made four saves during a New York power play midway through the third period. He made a chest save on a long attempt from defenseman Adam Fox and three point-blank stops on Artemi Panarin during a high-sticking penalty to Brett Kulak.
Trent Frederic scored on a breakaway midway through the second period as the Oilers improved to 2-0-1 in their first three games after starting slowly in recent seasons. Adam Henrique added an empty-net tally with 1:08 left.
Maple Leafs 7, Predators 4
Oliver Ekman-Larsson, John Tavares and William Nylander each recorded a goal and two assists as Toronto defeated visiting Nashville.
Auston Matthews scored twice for the Maple Leafs, who had lost two in a row. Toronto’s Jake McCabe logged a goal and an assist, and Bobby McMann also scored. Matthew Knies contributed three assists. Cayden Primeau made 26 saves in his first start with the Maple Leafs.
Michael McCarron, Erik Haula, Roman Josi and Nick Perbix scored for the Predators, who split the first two matchups of their four-game road trip. Perbix also had an assist, and Justus Annunen stopped 21 shots.
Canadiens 5, Kraken 4 (OT)
Cole Caufield’s second goal of the night came with 1:35 remaining in overtime as host Montreal beat Seattle.
Rookie Ivan Demidov forced overtime with a late goal and added an assist as the Canadiens registered their third straight win. Alex Newhook and Kirby Dach also scored for Montreal, and
Sam Montembeault made 18 saves.
Jared McCann scored in his third consecutive contest and had an assist for Seattle, which has five points through three games this season. Jaden Schwartz and Jani Nyman scored while Jani Nyman stopped 17 shots.
Capitals 3, Lightning 2 (OT)
Defenseman Jakob Chychrun scored 1:19 into overtime, fueling the host Washington to a victory over Tampa Bay.
Tom Wilson scored the Capitals’ first power-play goal of the season and added two assists. Aliaksei Protas also tallied, Dylan Strome notched two assists and Logan Thompson made 17 saves to propel Washington to its third straight victory.
Jake Guentzel scored a goal in the first period and Brayden Point added a power-play goal in the third for the Lightning. Andrei Vasilevskiy turned aside 25 shots.
Hurricanes 5, Sharks 1
Brandon Bussi made 16 saves to pick up the win in his NHL debut and five different Carolina players scored in a victory at San Jose.
Sean Walker, William Carrier, Eric Robinson, Shayne Gostisbehere and Jackson Blake found the net and Logan Stankoven had two assists for the Hurricanes, who extended their win streak against the Sharks to eight games.
William Eklund scored for San Jose, which remained winless (0-1-2) in three games. Alex Nedeljkovic finished with 38 saves.
Golden Knights 4, Flames 2
Jack Eichel scored twice, including the tiebreaking tally early in the third period, as visiting Vegas posted a win over Calgary.
Tomas Hertl added a goal and an assist and Kaedan Korczak also scored for Vegas. Mitch Marner chipped in two assists for the Golden Knights, who have earned points in four straight games to open the season (2-0-2). Vegas goalie Adin Hill allowed two goals on 10 first-period shots before he was replaced by Akira Schmid to start the second. Schmid stopped all 19 shots he faced in his second appearance of the season. Hill reportedly sustained a lower-body injury.
Mikael Backlund and Blake Coleman scored for the Flames, who led 2-0 after one period. Dustin Wolf made 26 saves for Calgary, which has dropped three straight.
Ducks 4, Penguins 3
Chris Kreider scored two goals, including the go-ahead tally on the power play with 1:27 remaining, as Anaheim erased an early two-score deficit for a victory over visiting Pittsburgh.
Kreider finished with three points as the Ducks won their home opener for the 10th consecutive season. Drew Helleson and Cutter Gauthier also scored goals, Leo Carlsson had two assists, and Lukas Dostal made 22 saves.
Justin Brazeau, Rickard Rakell and Anthony Mantha scored for the Penguins, who have dropped consecutive games after winning their first two of the season. Sidney Crosby and Ryan Shea each had two assists and Tristan Jarry made 18 saves for Pittsburgh.
Stars 5, Wild 2
Roope Hintz capped a three-point game with his first goal of the season, helping Dallas hold off Minnesota in the Stars’ home opener.
Hintz assisted on goals for Esa Lindell and Wyatt Johnston, and both reciprocated on Hintz’s tally. Radel Faksa and Matt Duchene also scored for Dallas, although the latter left the game early in the third period after taking a hit from Wild defenseman Jake Middleton. Jake Oettinger made 39 saves for the win.
Matt Boldy and Kirill Kaprizov both scored their fourth goals of the season for the Wild, who could not come back from a 3-0 deficit. Wild goalie Filip Gustavsson saved 20 of 23 shots he faced.
