Top overall pick Matthew Schaefer tied the score with 1:07 left in the third period Sunday and Simon Holmstrom produced the game winner just 29 seconds later for the host New York Islanders, who stunned the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-2 in Elmont, N.Y.

With goalie David Rittich pulled for the extra attacker, Schaefer was credited with his second goal of the game after his shot from just in front of the blue line bounced off the stick of Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski, skittered past New York center Anders Lee and went into the net.

Lee also factored into the game-winning goal, firing a shot off the right post that trickled behind Columbus goalie Elvis Merzlikins and along the goal line before Holmstrom poked it home with 38 seconds to play.

Schaefer, the reigning NHL Rookie of the Month, opened the scoring with a power play goal 5:53 into the first for the Islanders, who have won two straight following a three-game losing streak. The two-goal game is the first in the NHL for Schaefer.

Lightning 4, Mammoth 2

Jake Guentzel had a goal and an assist and visiting Tampa Bay beat Utah for its fifth straight win.

Guentzel scored the tiebreaking goal at 12:06 of the third period. Yanni Gourde and Anthony Cirelli also scored for the Lightning, who were opening a three-game road trip.

Lawson Crouse and Kailer Yamamoto scored for the Mammoth, who have lost two straight after winning seven in a row. Ian Cole had two assists and Vejmelka made 22 saves.

Flames 2, Flyers 1

Jonathan Huberdeau scored twice as Calgary salvaged the finale of its four-game road trip with a victory over Philadelphia.

Dustin Wolf made 17 saves for the Flames, who had won only two of their first 13 games. His only blemish in this one was a third-period goal by Travis Konecny.

Aleksei Kolosov made 19 saves for the Flyers, while Dan Vladar — who spent the previous four seasons with Calgary — watched from the bench after getting pulled in Saturday night’s defeat to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Ducks 4, Devils 1

Lukas Dostal was stout while making 32 saves, and Beckett Sennecke and Cutter Gauthier each had a goal with an assist, as Anaheim won its third straight, defeating visiting New Jersey.

Frank Vatrano also scored and Chris Kreider added an empty-netter for his sixth goal in seven games this season for Anaheim, which has also won five of six. Dostal, meanwhile, stopped all 14 shots he faced in the first period, all seven in the second and all but one of 12 in the third to earn a third consecutive victory.

With New Jersey chasing a three-goal deficit, Jack Hughes scored off a stellar saucer pass from Dawson Mercer, just out of the penalty box, in transition with 12:17 remaining in regulation. However, the Devils didn’t get closer as they concluded a 1-3-0 road trip.

Red Wings 3, Shark 2 (SO)

James van Riemsdyk scored the shootout-winning goal to give visiting Detroit a victory over San Jose.

Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider also scored for the Red Wings, who have won four of five games. Goaltender Cam Talbot made 16 saves through overtime.

Jeff Skinner and Sam Dickinson replied for the Sharks, who twice erased third-period deficits but had their two-game winning streak snapped. Goalie Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 29 shots through overtime, including a couple of breakaways.
