Nathan MacKinnon scored at 4:19 of overtime, lifting the Colorado Avalanche to their first win of the season, a 4-3 victory over the Anaheim Ducks in Denver on Friday night.

MacKinnon added an assist, and Ross Colton scored twice in the third period, including a go-ahead goal midway through. Casey Mittelstadt also had a goal and an assist, Mikko Rantanen contributed three assists and Alexandar Georgiev turned away 17 shots for Colorado.

MacKinnon got the winner when he skated through three Anaheim players and put a shot on Lukas Dostal, who made the initial save before the puck trickled through. It was MacKinnon’s second of the season and avoided the Avalanche’s first 0-5-0 start since moving to Denver in 1995.

Troy Terry, Leo Carlsson and Ryan Strome had goals and Dostal made 45 saves for Anaheim.

Jets 8, Sharks 3

Cole Perfetti had two goals and two assists, Nikolaj Ehlers had two goals and one assist, and Vladislav Namestnikov and Neal Pionk each had a goal and three assists as host Winnipeg clobbered San Jose.

Kyle Connor and Josh Morrissey also scored goals and Gabriel Vilardi and Alex Iafallo both added two assists for the Jets, who improved to 4-0-0, the best start to a season in franchise history. Winnipeg, which finished with four power-play goals, moved into a tie for first place with the Dallas Stars in the Central Division.

Tyler Toffoli, Luke Kunin and Fabian Zetterlund scored goals for the Sharks, who remained winless in five games (0-3-2) this season. Vitek Vanecek replaced starter Mackenzie Blackwood, who allowed five goals on 18 shots in the first 21:46, and made 15 saves.

Hurricanes 4, Penguins 1

Martin Necas had a goal and an assist as Carolina spread out the scoring in a victory over host Pittsburgh.

Jackson Blake, Shayne Gostisbehere and Jack Roslovic also scored for the Hurricanes in their first road game of the season. Carolina’s first scheduled away contest at the Tampa Bay Lightning on Oct. 12 was postponed due to Hurricane Milton. Jesperi Kotkaniemi had two assists and Frederik Andersen made 25 saves for his first win this season.

Drew O’Connor scored for the Penguins, while goalie Joel Blomqvist stopped 35 shots. Pittsburgh had 26 shots on goal, including 15 during its scoreless third period, and had its two-game win streak snapped.
