Returning to the lineup from an upper-body injury for the first time since Jan. 2, Carolina forward Martin Necas scored a second-period goal as the Hurricanes defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-2 on Friday in Raleigh, N.C.

Andrei Svechnikov potted the go-ahead tally on the power play at the 10:46 mark of the third period, shooting a loose puck past Red Wings netminder Alex Lyon after it ricocheted off Michael Bunting’s foot and into space at the top of the crease.

The win was the third in four games and the eighth in 10 outings (8-1-1) for the Hurricanes. Necas, Svechnikov and Sebastian Aho all finished with one goal and one assist.

The Red Wings left a game without a single point for the first time in 2024. Detroit had won six of its previous seven contests, with the only loss coming in overtime against the red-hot Edmonton Oilers.

The loss was the Red Wings’ first in regulation since a 5-3 setback to the Boston Bruins on New Year’s Eve.

Detroit’s Klim Kostin opened the scoring on Friday night 2:27 into the first period before Carolina tied the game at 1-1 through Jordan Martinook minutes later. The Hurricanes and Red Wings traded goals in the second period, with Necas and J.T. Compher scoring their 10th goals of the season. Compher’s goal came on a power play.

Despite pulling Lyon in the late stages for an extra skater, the Red Wings could not muster a comeback before Aho scored an empty-net goal, his 16th tally of the season.

Antti Raanta only needed to push aside 10 shots, as Detroit put up just 12 shots on the night. Lyon stopped 26 shots for the Red Wings.

Raanta earned the win on the same day the Hurricanes introduced reinforcements in the position, adding 28-year-old NHL journeyman Spencer Martin off waivers.

Detroit defenseman Jeff Petry played in his 900th game in the NHL and his 36th with the Red Wings. He spent most of his career with the Montreal Canadiens while also making stops with the Oilers and Pittsburgh Penguins.
