Logan Stankoven scored the go-ahead goal at the 12:13 mark of the third period and added an assist Sunday night as the visiting Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4.

Sebastian Aho, Seth Jarvis, Sean Walker and Taylor Hall also scored for the Hurricanes, who have won four in a row.

K’Andre Miller and Nikolaj Ehlers each added two assists and netminder Brandon Bussi stopped 16 shots.

William Nylander scored twice for the Maple Leafs, who have lost two straight.

John Tavares, playing in his 1,200th NHL game, and Auston Matthews added a goal and an assist apiece. Matthew Knies had two assists, while goalie Dennis Hildeby made a career-high 42 saves.

Toronto led 3-2 after an action-packed first period.

The Maple Leafs opened the scoring at 5:00 on a 2-on-1 started by Morgan Rielly’s long breakout pass from behind Toronto’s net. Knies fed Nylander, who switched from his forehand to the backhand in the slot before tucking the puck home.

Aho tied the game with a one-timer from the right circle while dipping to a knee during a power play at 8:34 and Jarvis gave Carolina the lead with a laser from the left circle at 14:31.

Toronto rallied with a pair before the period ended.

Tavares snapped home a short shot from Bobby McMann’s deft backhand pass at 15:31, and Nylander gave Toronto the lead with a slap shot from the left circle on a power play at 19:01.

Carolina rookie defenseman Charles-Alexis Legault cut his hand on Toronto’s Nicholas Robertson’s skate during a scuffle at the end of the first and did not return.

Jake McCabe’s pass to the right edge of the crease set up Matthews’ goal at 11:03 of the second period, creating the only two-goal advantage of the game.

But Carolina responded when Walker, who hit a post on a breakaway seven minutes earlier, scored when he lobbed a shot through traffic from the blue line at the 16:51 mark.

Hall pounced on a loose puck in front of the net to tie it 3:20 into the third period.

Stankoven scored the winner on a wrist shot after a Leafs’ turnover resulted in a 4-on-3 rush.

Carolina had a mammoth 22-2 advantage in shots on goal in the third and outshot the hosts 47-20 over 60 minutes.
