The Toronto Maple Leafs placed star captain Auston Matthews on injured reserve Friday afternoon due to an upper-body injury.

The move is retroactive to Sunday for Matthews, who is ineligible to play in Friday night’s game against the Detroit Red Wings and Saturday’s contest versus the Montreal Canadiens.

Matthews had been considered day-to-day since he was injured in Toronto’s 2-1 overtime loss to the Minnesota Wild on Sunday. The former Hart Trophy recipient logged an assist in just over 22 minutes of ice time before leaving the game.

Also on Friday, the Maple Leafs recalled forward Connor Dewar, who has been out because of a shoulder injury, from his long-term injured reserve conditional loan.

Matthews, 27, has recorded 11 points (five goals, six assists) in 13 games this season.

The forward led the NHL in goals scored for the third time in four seasons in 2023-24, tallying a career-high 69 to go along with 38 assists in 81 games.

Matthews has recorded 660 points (373 goals, 287 assists) in 575 career games since Toronto selected him with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NHL Draft.

Dewar, 25, has totaled 43 points (19 goals, 24 assists) in 190 career game with the Wild and Maple Leafs.
