Auston Matthews scored with 47 seconds left in overtime and the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the visiting Winnipeg Jets 1-0 on Wednesday night.

The Jets opened overtime with an unsuccessful power play on Calle Jarnkrok’s tripping penalty that carried over from the third period.

Matthews won it with his 39th goal of the season, tipping in Morgan Rielly’s pass.

Ilya Samsonov, making his second consecutive start, made 32 saves to earn his second shutout of the season and the 12th of his career.

Laurent Brossoit, making his 12th start of the season and first since Jan. 11, stopped 29 shots for Winnipeg.

The Jets have allowed two or fewer goals in 22 of their past 24 games.

The Maple Leafs, coming off a 2-2-0 road trip, opened the game with sloppy turnovers and the Jets had nine of the first 10 shots on goal.

The Jets finished with a 16-4 advantage in shots on goal in the first period.

Samsonov made two spectacular saves in the early minutes of the second period when Winnipeg had a two-man breakaway during a Maple Leafs power play.

Toronto followed with another unproductive power play. The Jets killed off a third Toronto power play late in the second period.

Winnipeg had a 21-15 advantage in shots on goal after the second period.

The Maple Leafs had their fourth straight power play early in the third period. Toronto had four shots, with Brossoit making a good save on William Nylander.

Soon after killing the penalty, Winnipeg had a two-on-one but Samsonov made a big save on Rasmus Kupari.

The Maple Leafs had their fifth power play late in the third. It ended with 36 seconds left when Nylander took Toronto’s first penalty of the game on a boarding call.

Winnipeg defenseman Josh Morrissey (lower-body injury) left in the first period and did not return.

Winnipeg’s Mark Scheifele, David Gustafsson and Gabriel Vilardi did not play due to lower-body injuries.

Tyler Bertuzzi (paternity leave) and Mark Giordano (undisclosed) sat out for Toronto.

The teams will meet again Saturday at Winnipeg.
