Will Smith and Collin Graf each had a goal and an assist while Michael Misa, Alexander Wennberg and Adam Gaudette also tallied for San Jose.

Sharks goalie Yaroslav Askarov made 32 saves.

Alex Newhook scored twice and Oliver Kapanen, Phillip Danault and Ivan Demidov also found the back of the net for the Canadiens.

Mike Matheson had three assists while Jake Evans chipped in a pair of helpers for Montreal, which failed to pick up a point for the first time in eight games (5-1-2).

Jakub Dobes stopped 21 shots.

San Jose squandered a 5-2 lead in the third, but Sherwood netted the winner, tapping home a cross-ice feed from Philipp Kurashev at 16:34.

Gaudette added the empty-netter at 19:56.

After Smith gave the Sharks a 5-2 lead, the Canadiens scored twice in an 18-second span.

Montreal pulled to 5-3 on a power play as Demidov one-timed a Lane Hutson cross-ice feed short-side.

Newhook made it a one-goal game at 5:20, snapping a shot past Askarov.

The Canadiens center added his second of the period on a power play at 10:56, banking a shot off Askarov and in to tie it 5-5.

The Sharks scored twice in a 25-second span in the final 1:37 of the second to open a two-goal lead.

San Jose took its first lead at 18:23 as Celebrini snapped a rolling puck five-hole past Dobes.

Wennberg made it 4-2 at 18:48, taking a pass from Sherwood and snapping a shot from the slot past Dobes.

The Canadiens took a 2-1 lead at 5:09 of the middle frame as Danault redirected a Matheson point shot past Askarov.

Misa tied it 2-2, banging home a loose puck in the slot at 10:28 of the second.

Kapanen opened the scoring at 6:18 of the first period, fooling Askarov with a shot through the legs of Sharks defenseman John Klingberg.

San Jose tied it 1-1 at 15:32 of the first as Graf tapped in a cross-ice feed from Smith for his 16th of the season.
