Joe Veleno had the first two-goal game of his career, Dylan Larkin supplied a goal and two assists, and the Detroit Red Wings extended their winning streak to four games by downing the host Ottawa Senators 5-2 on Saturday afternoon.

Shayne Gostisbehere and David Perron scored the other goals for Detroit, which tallied three times on the power play. Ville Husso made 35 saves.

Jake Sanderson and Ridly Greig had the goals for Ottawa, while Joonas Korpisalo stopped 18 shots.

The first period ended in a tie at 1-1.

A scuffle in front of the Wings goal less than seven minutes into the game resulted in five minor roughing penalties, including three against Detroit. The Red Wings killed off that Ottawa power play.

They couldn’t kill the Senators’ second power play, however, after Veleno was sent to the box for boarding. Sanderson scored on a slapshot from the point that beat Husso on the glove side. Brady Tkachuk and Josh Norris picked up the assists.

Gostisbehere tied it with 1:45 left in the period. Larkin set him up with a pass from behind Ottawa’s goal line as Gostisbehere sneaked into the slot. Perron had the second assist.

Veleno scored early in the second period, shortly after Ottawa killed off a Wings power play. Christian Fischer passed the puck from behind the net to Veleno, who scored before Korpisalo could slide over.

With Travis Hamonic in the penalty box for interference against Larkin, Detroit extended its lead to 3-1 with 5:06 remaining in the second. Once again, Larkin passed the puck from behind the Senators’ goal line. Perron scored from the edge of the right circle. Moritz Seider had the second assist.

Another power-play goal in the opening minute of the third gave Detroit a 4-1 lead. Larkin scored in the slot, with Gostisbehere and Seider credited with assists.

Veleno’s second goal came on a two-on-one breakaway. He lifted a shot over Korpisalo’s shoulder off a Daniel Sprong pass.

Greig answered with a goal after he got past the Wings defense midway through the period. Mathieu Joseph and Jakob Chychrun had the assists.
