Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored two goals and Mathew Barzal had a goal and two assists to lead the visiting New York Islanders to a 6-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night.
It was the 11th multi-goal game of Pageau’s career and the second three-point game of the season for Barzal. New York’s Casey Cizikas had a goal and an assist and Aatu Raty and Anders Lee also scored goals. The Islanders picked up their fourth win in the past five games while improving to 5-0-2 in their past seven games in Vancouver.
Ilya Sorokin, making his 100th career start, finished with 24 saves for the Islanders.
Bo Horvat scored both goals for Vancouver, his ninth multi-goal game of the season. Spencer Martin stopped 23 of 28 shots for the Canucks, who lost their third straight game.
Horvat gave Vancouver a 1-0 lead at the 18:23 mark of the first period when his deflection of an Oliver Ekman-Larsson shot bounced past Sorokin.
The Islanders tied it early in the second period when Raty, left alone cutting down the slot, fired a wrist shot past Martin’s blocker side for his second goal of the season.
Pageau gave New York a 2-1 lead midway through the middle period with a power-play goal. He tapped the rebound of a Ryan Pulock point shot inside the right post.
Barzal made it 3-1 at 16:28 of the second. He intercepted a Tyler Myers pass along the left boards and then fired a wrist shot from the edge of the left circle off the far post and in for his 10th goal of the season. It also extended Barzal’s goal streak to four games, the longest of his career.
Horvat cut it to 3-2 with a power-play goal, one-timing a J.T. Miller pass from the slot past Sorokin’s glove side for his 28th goal of the season and sixth in the past five games.
Lee increased New York’s lead to 4-2 early in the third period with a spinning wrist shot under the crossbar from the slot following an Ethan Bear turnover. It was his 14th goal of the campaign.
Cizikas made it 5-2 at the 9:44 mark. He raced down the left wing and took a Barzal pass and then flipped a wrist shot into the top far corner for his third goal of the season.
Pageau sealed it with a short-handed, six-on-four, empty-net goal with 2:09 remaining, his 10th goal of the season.
