NHL News: Jason Robertson pushes Stars past Panthers 5-1

Jason Robertson scored two goals, Jake Oettinger made 27 saves and the Dallas Stars beat the visiting Florida Panthers 5-1 on Sunday.

Defensemen Nils Lundkvist and Esa Lindell each posted second-period goals for the Stars, and fellow blue-liner Miro Heiskanen added an empty-netter as Dallas regrouped from back-to-back road losses in their last two contests to win their third straight at home.

The All-Star Robertson opened the scoring late in the first period and converted on a breakaway 4:21 into the third to push his goal total to 28 for Dallas, which finished strong after star Roope Hintz sat out the final two periods with an upper-body injury.

Carter Verhaeghe scored for Florida, which went 0-for-4 on the power play and failed in its attempt to win three in a row for the first time this season. Trying to make their way into playoff position in the Eastern Conference, the Panthers have lost nine of the last 14 games.

Dallas was outshot 15-8 in the first period, but Oettinger proved stout throughout the opening 20 minutes, notably stopping Verhaeghe on consecutive face-to-face chances. Robertson then gave the Stars a 1-0 lead, when he made his way through traffic and put home his own rebound with 3:15 remaining in the first.

The Stars went up 2-0 at 10:03 of the second period. On the power play, Lundkvist one-timed Wyatt Johnson’s pass by Panthers goaltender Spencer Knight (29 saves) for his fourth of the season.

Florida managed to get one back less than three minutes later when Verhaeghe angled the puck in just over Oettinger’s shoulder for his 19th goal. However, the Stars answered as Jamie Benn sent the puck into the slot for an open Lindell to bury with 6:46 remaining in the second.

With his third-period tally, Robertson has four goals in his last four contests, and six multi-goal games this season. Dallas, meanwhile, has won five of the last six at home, where it’s 12-4-3 in 2022-23.
