Jack Hughes scored his second goal of the game at 2:19 of overtime to lift the visiting New Jersey Devils to a 5-4 win against the New York Islanders in Elmont, N.Y., on Friday night.

Hughes also had two assists, Dougie Hamilton, Tyler Toffoli and Luke Hughes scored power-play goals, Jesper Bratt had three assists and Akira Schmid made 28 saves for the Devils, who went 4-for-5 on the power play.

Brock Nelson and Bo Horvat each scored two goals, Kyle Palmieri had two assists and Ilya Sorokin made 34 saves for the Islanders.

The Islanders pulled Sorokin for the extra attacker and Horvat scored with 1:11 remaining to tie the score 4-4.

Jack Hughes had given the Devils a 4-3 lead at 4:30 of the third period when he slid in from his defensive spot while New Jersey was on its fifth power play and scored on a backdoor pass from Ondrej Palat.

Nelson scored with a wrist shot from the left circle off the rush to give the Islanders a 1-0 lead at 12:35 of the first.

The Devils were on their second power play when Timo Meier dropped a pass for Hamilton entering the offensive zone, and he scored with a one-timer from the high slot to tie it 1-1 with 1:00 left in the opening period.

New Jersey went back on the power play late in the first period and Toffoli scored with the man-advantage 21 seconds into the second to move the Devils ahead 2-1.

Nelson got open in the slot and answered with a goal at 1:37 to knot it back up 2-2.

New Jersey went back on the power play and Luke Hughes scored with a slap shot through traffic from just inside the blue line to give the Devils a 3-2 lead at 2:36 of the second.

New York tied it back up 3-3 on a goal by Horvat from a shark angle just above the goal line at 6:10 of the second.

Devils forwards Nico Hischier and Chris Tierney did not play in the third period because of unspecified injuries.
