Carolina forward Teuvo Teravainen sustained a broken left hand when slashed in the third period of the Hurricanes’ 4-3 overtime win against the New York Islanders on Wednesday.

Teravainen will undergo surgery on Thursday and will miss the remainder of the first-round Eastern Conference playoff series, according to Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour.

The injury occurred on a third-period slash by Islanders forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau, who wasn’t penalized.

“The guy absolutely tomahawk chops him,” Brind’Amour said. “It’s a tomahawk chop. We just watched it. … So I’m a little pissed, I’ll be honest with you.”

Teravainen tied for the team best with a plus-2 rating on Wednesday as the Hurricanes took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

The 28-year-old Finland native finished the regular season with 12 goals and 25 assists in 68 games.

After opening his career by playing with the Chicago Blackhawks from 2013-14 to 2015-16, Teravainen has spent the past seven seasons in Carolina. In 594 career games, he has 130 goals and 276 assists. Teravainen also has 20 goals and 23 assists in 75 career postseason games.
