Goaltender Craig Anderson will sign a one-day contract with Ottawa to retire as a Senator.
Nothing official has been announced but reports Thursday indicated it could happen before Tuesday’s game against the Buffalo Sabres, the last team he played for.
Buffalo announced later Thursday that Anderson was joining the Sabres in a part-time “hockey liaison” role.
“Craig Anderson’s voice, experience and love for the game have been invaluable components to our team’s growth over the past two seasons,” Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams said in a statement. “Our players have benefited greatly from the habits and lessons he picked up during his accomplished 20-year career.
“We are thrilled that Craig will continue to be a guiding presence for the Sabres.”
Anderson, 42, played for 20 seasons with six NHL teams. He played 435 of his 709 career games with the Senators.
He compiled a 319-275-73 career record with 43 shutouts, a 2.86 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage.
In addition to the Senators (2011-20) and Sabres (2021-23), he played for the Chicago Blackhawks, Florida Panthers, Colorado Avalanche and Washington Capitals.
Anderson was 11-11-2 with one shutout, a 3.06 GAA and a .908 save percentage with the Sabres in 2022-23.
The Illinois native led the NHL in total saves (2,047) in 2009-10 and in save percentage (.941) and GAA (1.69) in 2012-13.
Anderson never won a Stanley Cup. He participated in the postseason six times, losing with Ottawa in the 2017 Eastern Conference finals to the eventual champion Pittsburgh Penguins in seven games.
