Owen Tippett scored with 1:35 remaining in overtime as the surging Philadelphia Flyers beat the host New Jersey Devils 3-2 on Tuesday night in Newark.
Tippett secured Philadelphia’s third straight win and helped the Flyers improve to 7-0-2 in their last nine games by capitalizing on a New Jersey defensive zone miscue.
Devils center Jack Hughes tried to make the pass to his brother, defenseman Luke Hughes, in the neutral zone, but Tippett intercepted the puck. He got past Luke Hughes into the high slot and lifted a shot over New Jersey goalie Vitek Vanecek’s glove and inside the left post for his 11th goal of the season.
Tippett won it after goalie Samuel Ersson stopped Nico Hischier and Flyers forward Joel Farabee was stopped on a two-on-one going the other way. Tippett scored after being denied on a partial breakaway with about five minutes left in the third period.
Philadelphia’s Ryan Poehling scored a pair of tying goals in the second period — his fifth career multi-goal game as the Flyers got their seventh one-goal victory of the season.
Ersson made 24 saves and improved to 8-1-1 in his past 10 starts as Carter Hart was scratched again due to an illness. Ersson has made four straight starts in place of Hart.
Mike McLeod scored late in the first period and Jesper Bratt scored a power-play goal as the Devils lost their second straight and fell to 8-3-1 in their past 12 games.
Vanecek made 23 saves after being held out of Sunday’s 5-1 loss to the Anaheim Ducks because of illness.
The Devils struck first following a Philadelphia miscue in the defensive zone.
Rasmus Ristolainen lost the puck to Curtis Lazar in the right corner and the puck moved to Nathan Bastian. Bastian made a backhand pass through the crease to McLeod, who shoved the puck from the left side over Ersson’s glove 14:16 into the game.
Poehling scored 70 seconds into the second, picking off a pass in the middle of the slot and finishing off a give-and-go with Farabee.
New Jersey regained the lead 2:44 into the second. Bratt jammed a loose puck over Ersson after Hischier’s attempt from the right side was stopped but not controlled.
The Devils held the lead until Travis Sanheim pried the puck from defenseman Brendan Smith and Poehling finished a two-on-one with Travis Konecny by lifting a shot from down low by Vanecek with 11:41 left in the second.
