NHL News: Flyers searching for 1st road win in Canada’s capital vs. Senators

The Philadelphia Flyers will look to follow up a successful four-game homestand by recording their first road win this season when they visit the Ottawa Senators on Thursday.

The Flyers dropped a pair of one-goal decisions away from home to begin the campaign before posting a 3-1-0 mark in Philadelphia.

Owen Tippett scored two goals in the Flyers’ 5-2 win over the Seattle Kraken on Monday. Tippett has scored at least one goal in three straight games and has a team-best five in six contests this season, after requiring 25 games to total five goals in 2024-25.

“I think it makes it easier for that confidence to kind of stick around,” Tippett said of his early-season success, per NBC Sports Philadelphia. “But at the same point, you can’t get too focused on that. You’ve still got to work on our goal here, and playing a complete game with whoever you’re on the ice with. Obviously, it’s nice to see them going in right now, but there are other parts of the game we’ve got to focus on, too.”

Tippett will look to match his career-best goal-scoring streak of four games, set from Nov. 10-18, 2023.

Captain Sean Couturier has enjoyed the addition of Tippett to his line.

“I think we’ve played together at times in the past, and ‘Tipp’ is hot right now, so just trying to give him the puck and use his shot, his speed,” Couturier said. “He’s playing really well. Think we’re just trying to extend some (offensive) zone time and create some cycles, bring pucks to the net and capitalize.”

Flyers forward Trevor Zegras extended his assist streak to five games by setting up Noah Cates’ power-play goal in the second period. Zegras is tied with Couturier for the team lead in assists with five.

While Philadelphia appears to be ascending, Ottawa lost for the fifth time in six games (2-4-1) with a 3-2 overtime setback to the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday.

Senators defenseman Thomas Chabot, however, said he was encouraged by his team’s resolve in battling back from a two-goal deficit in the third period.

“We saw the Ottawa Senators tonight,” said Chabot, who scored from the point to forge a 2-2 tie. “It’s plain and simple: We played to our identity, our game, we put pressure on them all night, and we created chances. Some of them didn’t go in.

“It (stinks) to lose, and everybody is (angry) about the loss, but it’s a step in the right direction.”

Chabot excelled the last time the Flyers visited Canada’s capital city. He collected a goal and two assists to join Tim Stutzle with a three-point performance in Ottawa’s 4-3 overtime victory April 13. Stutzle recorded his second goal of the game by scoring in overtime.

Dylan Cozens began the comeback Tuesday by scoring a goal just 13 seconds into the third period. He extended his goal streak to three games and point streak to five with his fourth tally of the season.

Shane Pinto, who leads the team with seven goals, was held off the scoresheet for just the second time this season.
