Arizona Coyotes forward Nick Schmaltz will be sidelined for 6 to 8 weeks with an upper-body injury sustained in Thursday’s season opener.
He exited in the first period of the 6-2 loss at Pittsburgh after logging 2:26 of ice time over five shifts.
Schmaltz, 26, finished second on the Coyotes last season with a career-high 59 points (23 goals, 36 assists) in 63 games.
He set an Arizona record with seven points (two goals, five assists) against Ottawa on March 5.
Schmaltz has 241 points (78 goals, 163 assists) in 365 games with the Coyotes and Chicago Blackhawks (2016-18), who drafted him in the first round (20th overall) in 2014.
