Three days after mutually parting ways with head coach Peter Laviolette, the Washington Capitals announced Monday that assistant coaches Kevin McCarthy and Blaine Forsythe would not return next season.

Forsythe had worked with the Capitals for 17 seasons — starting as a video coach in 2006-07, spending the 2008-09 season as a scout and then re-joining the staff as an assistant coach from 2009-10 onward.

McCarthy joined the staff in October 2020, shortly after Laviolette was hired ahead of the 2020-21 season.

“We want to sincerely thank Kevin and Blaine for their efforts and contributions to the Capitals during their respective tenures and wish them all the best moving forward,” general manager Brian MacLellan said in a statement. “Blaine has been a dedicated member of our organization for 17 seasons and was instrumental in helping the franchise capture its first Stanley Cup in 2018.”

The Capitals said the rest of the coaching staff — assistant coach Scott Allen, goaltending coach Scott Murray, video coach Brett Leonhardt and video coordinator Emily Engel-Natzke — will return in 2023-24.

Laviolette signed a three-year contract to coach Washington in September 2020. His contract expires at the end of the league year, June 30, and after he met with MacLellan following the season, they agreed to part ways.

The Capitals missed the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since 2013-14, ending an eight-year streak of making the postseason. Laviolette’s Capitals teams went 115-78-27 in his three-year stay, including a 35-37-10 mark in 2022-23.
