The Philadelphia Flyers acquired defenseman Tony DeAngelo from the Carolina Hurricanes and signed him to a two-year contract extension.

The Flyers did not divulge terms of the deal, however multiple media outlets reported it was worth $10 million.

Philadelphia also received a seventh-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft. The Hurricanes, in turn, secured a second-round selection in the 2024 draft, a third-round pick in 2023 and a fourth-round selection in 2022.

“We’re very happy to add Tony to our team and I know he is very excited to join the Flyers,” Philadelphia general manager Chuck Fletcher said. “We did our due diligence and we strongly believe in Tony and his ability to help our team. He is a right-handed shot who moves the puck extremely well and will drive offense from the back end for us.”

DeAngelo recorded 51 points (10 goals, 41 assists) in 64 games last season with Carolina. The Hurricanes made attempts to keep him in the fold, but GM Don Waddell said they couldn’t get a new contract done.

“We were talking about an extension but just couldn’t get anything in place. There were teams that were interested, so we did our best to maximize the return,” Waddell said.

It was the 26-year-old’s lone campaign with the Hurricanes, who signed him to a one-year, $1 million deal after the New York Rangers disowned him after six games in 2020-21 following a reported incident with goaltender Alexandar Georgiev.

It wasn’t DeAngelo’s first brush with controversy.

The NHL suspended him for three games in 2016 during his rookie season with the Arizona Coyotes for abuse of officials. That came two years after the Ontario Hockey League suspended him for eight games for making a racist slur at a teammate.

DeAngelo totaled 157 points (34 goals, 123 assists) and 232 penalty minutes in 270 career games with the Coyotes, Rangers and Hurricanes.
