Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Zech McPhearson will miss the 2023 season after sustaining a torn right Achilles in a preseason game against the Cleveland Browns, multiple media outlets reported Friday.
The Eagles announced that wide receiver Tyrie Cleveland and defensive tackle Moro Ojomo are both expected to make full recoveries after leaving the game on carts with apparent neck injuries.
McPhearson, 25, was injured in the second quarter of Thursday’s game after breaking up a pass over the middle. He was assisted off the field before being carted to the locker room.
McPhearson was playing in place of injured starter Avonte Maddox during training camp. He’s also a key contributor with the Eagles’ special teams units.
McPhearson has totaled 30 tackles and one sack in 33 career games (one start) since being selected by Philadelphia in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
The Eagles confirmed Friday that Cleveland and Ojomo both have been diagnosed with concussions, and Cleveland also has a neck sprain.
“We commend our medical team for quickly diagnosing each player’s condition and acting with precision as they administered care,” the team posted on Twitter. “A full recovery for both players is expected in due time.”
Midway through the third quarter, Cleveland leaped in an attempt to make a catch. The pass was broken up by a defender, and Cleveland landed on his head and neck. He lay face down on the turf after the play before the medical staff came to assist him.
Cleveland had one reception for 4 yards before exiting the game.
The 25-year-old Florida alumnus was selected by the Broncos in the seventh round of the 2020 draft. He spent the past three years in Denver, seeing the majority of his action on special teams. Cleveland signed with the Eagles earlier this year.
In six games last year, Cleveland had two receptions for 28 yards. Overall in 23 NFL games, he has eight catches for 91 yards. He has also returned 12 kickoffs an average of 21 yards.
Ojomo got hurt early in the fourth quarter. The 22-year-old rookie was credited with three tackles and one quarterback hit in the game. The Eagles selected him in the seventh round of this year’s draft out of Texas.
