NFL News: Ravens DE Calais Campbell had surgery to treat infection

Baltimore Ravens defensive end Calais Campbell missed last Sunday’s game with what was listed as an illness on the injury report. His absence actually was due to a surgery to remove an infection, Campbell told ESPN on Saturday.

The six-time Pro Bowl player said he’s already back at full strength thanks to the Oct. 26 surgery plus an antibiotics’ regimen, but acknowledged it was a concerning situation at first.

“I had an infection that required surgery to remove, so it was pretty bad,” Campbell said. “In the moment … yeah, that’s scary.”

Although Campbell didn’t go into much detail about the procedure, he is not listed on the injury report as the Ravens head to New Orleans for a Monday night matchup against the Saints.

“I feel good,” Campbell told ESPN. “I don’t feel any different, so that’s good. I’m back to my normal self.”

Campbell, 36, is the only active NFL defender to play in at least 200 career games. He started his career with the Arizona Cardinals in 2008, followed by the Jaguars from 2017-19, before joining the Ravens in 2020. He has a career total of 794 tackles and 96.5 sacks in 220 games.
