The New England Patriots hired Alex Van Pelt as their new offensive coordinator under new coach Jerod Mayo on Thursday.

Van Pelt, 53, served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Cleveland Browns over the past four seasons.

New England also promoted DeMarcus Covington to defensive coordinator and hired Jeremy Springer, who was the Rams assistant special teams coach, as special teams coach.

The Browns scored 408 points in 2020 under Van Pelt for the franchise’s second-best output in team history. The 396 points scored in 2023 marked the fifth most.

Van Pelt was a standout college quarterback at Pitt before playing in 31 games for the Buffalo Bills from 1995 to 2003. He went 3-8 as a starting quarterback and had more career interceptions (24) than touchdown passes (16).

He began his coaching career in NFL Europe in 2005 before joining the Bills one season later.

Covington, 34, joined the New England staff before the 2017 season. He spent the past four seasons coaching the defensive line.

Covington played college football for Samford before turning to coaching.

Springer turns 35 later this month. He spent the past two seasons as a special teams assistant for the Los Angeles Rams.

Springer played at UTEP before beginning his coaching career.

Mayo replaced longtime coach Bill Belichick after the 2023 season.
