Carolina Panthers interim coach Steve Wilks sent wide receiver Robbie Anderson to the locker room during Sunday’s 24-10 loss to the host Los Angeles Rams following apparent arguments with his position coach.
According to published reports, Anderson was seen on the sidelines having a heated argument with wide receivers coach Joe Dailey during the first quarter. They had another exchange during the third quarter before Wilks intervened and told Anderson to hit the showers.
“I was honestly confused,” Anderson said after the game. “I wanted to be in the game. I’ve never had somebody yell to get out of the game. So I was honestly confused and upset by that as I should be.”
Anderson went on to say he was going to speak up for himself after not doing so in prior moments of controversy earlier in his playing career.
“It’s not just about me,” Anderson said. “It’s when young kids go through similar things, they need to know to stand up for themselves.”
Wilks, who took over the team Monday after coach Matt Rhule was fired, did not get into details.
“No one is bigger than the team,” Wilks said. “I’m not going to focus and put a lot of attention on one individual.”
Anderson finished the game without a target in the passing game, which was led by P.J. Walker with both Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold sidelined by injuries.
The Athletic recently reported that the Panthers are trying to trade away the veteran receiver. He has 13 receptions for 206 yards and one touchdown this year and has tallied 161 catches for 1,821 yards and nine touchdowns in three years with the Panthers. Before that, he was a starter with the New York Jets, catching 20 touchdowns in four years.
The Panthers (1-5) own the worst record in the NFL following Sunday’s loss.
