The Detroit Lions parted ways with Marvin Jones Jr. on Tuesday shortly after the wide receiver announced over social media that he was stepping away from football to address personal family matters.

Jones did not travel with the Lions on Saturday and had been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens due to personal issues.

“I just want to say that I have so much love and respect for the Ford Family, the city of Detroit, my teammates and coaches,” Jones wrote on Instagram. “To be brief, I am stepping away from the team to take care of personal family matters. Although this was no easy decision, I cannot be the person/player that I need to be for this team as well as tend to my family from afar. This organization has been amazing showing love and support for myself and my family over the years and this time is no different. For that I am appreciative.”

Jones, 33, has just five catches for 35 yards in six games this season.

He has totaled 547 receptions for 7,421 yards and 58 touchdowns in 151 career games (118 starts) with the Cincinnati Bengals (2012-15), Jacksonville Jaguars (2021-22) and Lions (2016-20, 2023).

Also on Tuesday, the Lions placed Mohamed Ibrahim on the practice squad/injured list and signed fellow running back Jermar Jefferson to the practice squad.
