NFL News: Kellen Moore, Cowboys part; Mike McCarthy to call plays

The Dallas Cowboys and offensive coordinator Kellen Moore mutually agreed to part ways.

Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed the move in a statement Sunday night.

“I want to thank Kellen for his deep commitment, hard work and dedication that were a core part of his time with the Cowboys,” McCarthy said. “The production of our offense and his mentorship of Dak [Prescott] were at the center of Kellen’s impact, and we are grateful for his tenure and leadership.”

According to the Dallas Morning News, McCarthy will assume play-calling duties for the Cowboys. However, ESPN reported that no such decision has been made.

Moore, 34, had been a player and coach with the Cowboys since 2015. He spent the final three years of his six-year NFL playing career as a backup quarterback for Dallas.

After working in 2018 as the Cowboys’ quarterback coach, Moore was promoted to offensive coordinator and spent the past four seasons in that role.

The Cowboys went 12-5 in the 2022 regular season and earned their second straight playoff trip. After beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-14 in the wild-card round, they fell 19-12 to the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional round.

Dallas ranked fourth in the NFL in scoring offense in 2022 with 27.5 points per game.

The Cowboys will begin searching for a replacement for Moore, one who will not be responsible for calling plays. Moore, meanwhile, has attracted interviews for head-coaching vacancies before and figures to be a popular commodity. He interviewed with the Carolina Panthers this month before that franchise hired Frank Reich to be their next head coach.

The Cowboys also parted with six assistant coaches late last week. Defensive coordinator Dan Quinn is returning to the staff for 2023.
