NFL News: Jets coach on QB Justin Fields: ‘If he’s cleared, he’s the starter’

New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields will start Monday’s game at the Miami Dolphins, provided he is cleared from concussion protocol, coach Aaron Glenn said.

Glenn made that point clear on Thursday morning, prior to Fields being a full participant in practice later in the day.

“If he’s cleared, he’s the starter,” Glenn said.

Fields was placed in concussion protocol after the Jets’ 30-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sept. 14. He was injured in the opening minute of the fourth quarter when he was smacked by Buffalo pass rusher Joey Bosa after throwing an incomplete pass. Fields’ head hit the turf as he landed. He remained in the game for one more play and Bosa sacked Fields, causing a fumble.

Fields was ruled out for New York’s Week 3 game, thereby putting Tyrod Taylor at the controls in a 29-27 setback to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Taylor, 36, completed 26 of 36 passes for 197 yards with two touchdowns and one interception that was returned for a score against the Buccaneers. He was making his first start since 2023.

Fields, 26, has completed just 57.6 percent of his passes for 245 yards with one touchdown. He also has rushed for 97 yards and two scores in two games.

The Bears selected Fields with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2021 draft. He spent three seasons in Chicago and one with the Pittsburgh Steelers before signing with the Jets as a free agent in the offseason.

Fields is 14-32 as a starter and has thrown for 8,025 yards with 46 TDs and 31 interceptions.

Linebacker Jermaine Johnson II and cornerback Jarvis Brownlee Jr. both missed New York’s practice Thursday with ankle injuries. Brownlee was obtained from the Tennessee Titans on Tuesday.

Running back Kene Nwangwu (hamstring), receiver Josh Reynolds (hamstring), defensive tackle Jay Tufele (illness) and safety Tony Adams (hip) were limited participants.
