Miami Dolphins rookie wide receiver Daewood Davis was released from a Jacksonville-area hospital on Sunday, able to travel home with team personnel, the club announced.
In Saturday’s preseason finale against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Davis was hit by linebacker Dequan Jackson in the fourth quarter. After falling to the ground, he was tended to by medical personnel from both the Dolphins and Jaguars, then placed on a backboard and taken off the field and to Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville.
Davis has been placed in the NFL’s concussion protocol, Miami coach Mike McDaniel said Sunday.
“He’s doing better than last night in terms of strength and stuff,” McDaniel said. “Like I said last night, there were certain things that we were worried about that were avoided. … There’s certainly a lot of guys that are very, very, very happy and relieved to see him.”
Postgame, the team announced that Davis, 24, was conscious and had “movement in all extremities.”
The game was called with eight minutes, 32 seconds remaining, giving the Jaguars a 31-18 win.
“A lot of guys respect him, he’s very well-respected in the locker room,” Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa said. “He’s a great player, he’s a great teammate. He’s a great person. It just would’ve hard to have gone back out after seeing something like that.”
Davis played two seasons at Oregon, then two at Western Kentucky.
In 2022 with the Hilltoppers, he played in 12 games, catching 63 passes for 872 yards and seven touchdowns.
Also, Dolphins safety Elijah Campbell injured a knee against the Jaguars and was carted off the field. McDaniel said Campbell didn’t tear an ACL but has a “substantial injury that will take him into the season.”
Campbell, 28, was competing for a starting position. He has played in 26 games with one start over the past three seasons for Miami.
