Washington Commanders running back Brian Robinson is recovering from surgery after being shot multiple times in an apparent robbery attempt Sunday night.

The 23-year-old rookie posted a brief update Monday morning on his Instagram story.

“Surgery went well!” he wrote. “Thanks for the prayers! God is Great!”

Robinson was taken to a Washington, D.C., hospital with non-life-threatening injuries Sunday night. A spokesman for the team said co-owners Dan and Tanya Snyder, team president Jason Wright and head coach Ron Rivera were at the hospital with Robinson.

Rivera told reporters Monday that Robinson “is in a really good place” and could be released later in the day. He said the Commanders will not rule out Robinson playing this season.

“The doctors were very positive with him and he was very positive as well,” Rivera said. “He’s very fortunate. He’s doing well. It will be a matter of time before he’s back out here. There’s no timeline, but everything was very positive.

“It’s just about the healing process, and once he’s well enough to get on the field, doctors have to clear him and we’ll go from there. Everything is positive so far.”

A Metro Police spokesman told ESPN that the incident occurred around 6 p.m. ET. Police arrived at the scene and found Robinson suffering from gunshot wounds to his lower extremities. He was shot in the glute and lower leg, according to NFL Network.

Police said a weapon was recovered near the scene and two potential suspects have been identified. Authorities were not certain whether Robinson was the victim of an attempted carjacking or armed robbery.

Robinson, a third-round draft pick this spring, rushed for 57 yards on 14 carries with one touchdown this preseason, adding two catches for 15 yards.

As a senior at Alabama in 2021, Robinson rushed for 1,343 yards with 14 touchdowns for the national title runners-up.
