NFL News: Commanders have NFL’s final head coaching vacancy

The only vacancy sign still flashing “open” during the current NFL coaching cycle is in the nation’s capital.

The Washington Commanders are the last team that still needs to hire a head coach after the Seattle Seahawks reportedly hired Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald on Wednesday.

The Commanders parted ways with Ron Rivera after a 4-13 season in 2023.

The reported finalists in Washington are Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and Ravens associate head coach and defensive line coach Anthony Weaver.

Macdonald also met with the Commanders before replacing Pete Carroll in Seattle.

Two other candidates — Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and Houston Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik — decided to remain in their current roles.

The Commanders had second interviews with Weaver on Monday and with Quinn and Glenn on Tuesday.

Glenn, 51, has been Detroit’s defensive coordinator since 2021 after coaching defensive backs with the Cleveland Browns (2014-15) and New Orleans Saints (2016-20). He was a three-time Pro Bowl cornerback during a 15-year NFL playing career (1994-2008).

Quinn, 53, was the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons from 2015-20, compiling a 43-42 record before being fired after an 0-5 start in 2020. His Falcons blew a 28-3 lead to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI. He completed his third season as the DC in Dallas in 2023.

Weaver, 43, joined the Ravens’ coaching staff in 2021. He was the Houston Texans’ defensive coordinator in 2020 and has also coached defensive lines for the Texans, Browns, Buffalo Bills and New York Jets since 2012.
