NFL News: Coach: Tim Boyle to start for Jets again next week

Tim Boyle will get another start at quarterback for the New York Jets, despite throwing for just 179 yards in a 34-13 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Friday.

The Jets (4-7) host the Atlanta Falcons on Dec. 3.

“Yeah, we’re giving Timmy another shot to roll next week,” Jets coach Robert Saleh said Saturday. “Obviously, there are things that he could have done better. There are things he had no control over. I know he battled out there. We were able to get to certain calls that we were hoping to. We were able to execute a lot of the different things that we wanted to execute. It just didn’t come to full fruition.”

Boyle took over the offense from Zach Wilson, who was benched after posting some less-than-stellar numbers as a fill-in for injured starter Aaron Rodgers: a 3-6 record, a 59.2 percent completion rate, six touchdown passes, seven interceptions and 38 sacks.

Boyle completed 27 of 38 passes for 179 yards with one touchdown pass, two interceptions and seven sacks for 49 yards against Miami. One of the interceptions came on a Hail Mary to end the first half that was returned 99 yards for a touchdown.

Wilson has fallen to No. 3 on the depth chart. Veteran Trevor Siemian is No. 2 behind Boyle.

Rodgers, who turns 40 next week, tore an Achilles in the first quarter of the season opener against the Buffalo Bills. He is working out with the team and hopes to return this season, but as the Jets fall further out of playoff contention, Saleh could put the brakes on that plan.
