NFL News: Chiefs DL Isaiah Buggs arrested in Alabama

Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs was booked on a domestic violence/burglary charge Sunday morning in Alabama.

According to online records from the Tuscaloosa County, Ala., jail, Buggs was released on $5,000 bond, AL.com reported on Sunday.

The arrest continues a tumultuous offseason for both Buggs and the Chiefs.

Buggs was charged with animal cruelty last month in Tuscaloosa after two dogs under his care — a Pitbull and a Rottweiler mix — were found to be negelected and severely malnourished, AL.com reported. One of the dogs had to be euthanized.

In that case, authorities charged him with two misdemeanor counts of second-degree animal cruelty.

In a statement to AL.com, Buggs’ agent said the player denied the charges and said the city had an ulterior motive in filing those charges.

“We believe the City of Tuscaloosa’s decision to file charges today is part of a concerted effort by the City of Tuscaloosa and Tuscaloosa Police Department to besmirch Mr. Buggs’ name and reputation as part of an ongoing subversive campaign to force the close of his local business Kings Hookah Lounge,” the statement from Trey Robinson said.

Robinson also wrote that Buggs had been arrested twice on unspecified misdemeanor charges this offseason but the records weren’t public.

Buggs, who played college football at Alabama, was selected by the Steelers in the six round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent three seasons in Pittsburgh and the past two with the Detroit Lions. Released in January by the Lions, he signed with the Chiefs.

The 27-year-old Buggs has played in 56 games (23 starts) and posted 89 tackles, 12 quarterback hits and two sacks. He returned one fumble for 33 yards.

Also among the Chiefs, receiver Rashee Rice also is facing eight felony charges, including six counts of collision involving injury, following a six-vehicle crash March 30 on a Dallas highway. According to an arrest-warrant affidavit, he was driving 119 mph and caused the crash.

Last month, Chiefs offensive linemen Chukwuebuka Godrick and Wanya Morris were arrested in Johnson County, Kan., on misdemeanor possession of marijuana. They were released from jail after posting bond.
